I’ve worked with so many women who’ve told me that they find it difficult to find time for themselves. It’s not the only reason for their weight gain, but it is a huge factor to consider. When you don’t do things that make you happy, you don’t feel it instantly, but you’ll find yourself withering away mentally and emotionally. You think that fulfilling the needs of your loved ones is enough to keep you running, but self-sacrifice can only do so much…for anyone.
Being unselfish is a wonderful thing, but it shouldn’t always be at your own expense. You have to find time for yourself to feel that you value and love yourself, too. When you love yourself, your self-esteem goes higher, and you feel more confident about yourself. And when that happens, you feel empowered.
You no longer what to stay unhealthy and unfit because you know you can do better. You don’t want to feel discouraged because you are highly motivated. These are the reasons why you need to take care of yourself more.
5 Ways to Find Time for Yourself
If making this change is such a struggle for you, here are some tips that will help you get started:
1. Why are you guilty?
Start by asking yourself where the guilt is coming from. Why do you feel bad about giving time to yourself? Really dig deep and reflect. Journalling or writing it down can help you. Also, think about a friend who spends time on herself, would you support her? If yes, why can’t you support yourself? By closing in on your reasons, you will find it easier to break free from the guilt.
2. Stop apologising
Has it been your habit to apologise for something you want to do alone that makes you happy? It’s time to stop apologising and start telling your loved ones what you what and need. You’re not selfish for doing that, but if you want to take care of yourself, then they’ll be more than happy to support and help you. You also have to learn to start saying “no” to thing you really don’t want to do.
You need to declutter and start prioritising. Sometimes, we give ourselves too much credit for being able to do everything, so we continue to do everything! That has got to change because that creates the clutter in your life. You’re focused on doing many different things that it makes you feel overwhelmed and distracted. Instead, focus on the more important things. Get your peace of mind. And as you declutter, you’ll find more time for yourself.
4. Do what makes you happy
Now that the guilt, apologies and clutter are out of the way, you are now at the centre. Do what makes you happy. Do something you haven’t done in a while. Even getting your nails done or a haircut will easily make you feel good. If you want some time alone, why don’t you travel? Travelling is a great way to reflect, find peace of mind and recharge. Take on a new hobby or challenge. Go shopping!
5. Schedule accordingly
Scheduling is a great way to squeeze in some time for yourself. Don’t be afraid to write it down on the kitchen calendar. It doesn’t matter if it’s a full-day of “me time” or just a 30-minute walk in the park in the morning. When you schedule in time for yourself intentionally, you have to follow through with conviction and commitment. This will help you develop the habit of giving yourself time.
There’s no room for guilt or feeling bad when you decide to prioritise yourself. Remember that by taking care of yourself, you’re absorbing all the positive energy around you, which will also translate to how you care for your loved ones. No one loses here.
